Sprinkler winterization, also known as irrigation system winterization, prepares your sprinkler system for the cold Denver months to prevent freezing damage. Here's what typically entails sprinkler winterization:

  • Shutting Off the Water Supply: The first step is to shut off the main water supply to the sprinkler system. This prevents water from flowing into the system during freezing temperatures.


  • Draining the System: Next, the system needs to be drained of any remaining water. This can be done by opening drain valves or using compressed air to blow out water from the pipes, sprinkler heads, and valves. Removing as much water as possible is essential to prevent freezing and damage.


  • Insulating Exposed Components: Any above-ground components, such as backflow preventers, valves, and above-ground pipes, should be insulated to protect them from freezing temperatures. This can be done using insulated covers, foam insulation, or other materials designed for winterization.


  • Programming the Controller: Adjust the sprinkler system controller to winter mode or turn it off completely to prevent it from activating during the winter months.
